once there was a seal, and he lived with his seal family several hundred yards from the edge of a sheer cliff, overlooking a vast expanse of blinding cold whiteness underlined by a brilliantly crisp blue sea hundreds of feet below. every morning, at precisely 6:17 AM (though the seal didn't know this, not owning, or being able to read, a clock), he would squiggle his way to the very edge of the cliff, closer to the edge than was really safe or reasonable for a seal to go. he would know that he had gone far enough when he felt the subtle tremors of the ground caving in, as little bits of ice would start to crumble under the front-most part of his flippers, and he would feel the adrenaline tear through his body as he quickly backstepped (or backflipped... except not actually a flip, but you know), away from the cliff, and leaned his seal head over the edge to watch the chunks fall down for what seemed like eons, time hanging in the air like a low fog, to splash into the water below and begin their new life in the ocean.
