Juliette Esper has the heart of a gypsy as she pans over the terrain of styles that lead to “Revival”-her latest jazz record of a live gig in September 2002. Originally from Estonia, Juliette has scanned the European horizon to find a safe haven on the emerald isle Her Irish repertoire includes jazz standards as well as corky-purple pop funk project Beatroot (www.beatrootmusic.com). “Jazz first of all for me represents freedom in music. I can finally be myself,” says Juliette and indeed it is amazing her confidence and ability to personalize old jazz standards in a unique, heartwarming and thrilling way.
Although she is always very feminine she is particularly sexy when you hear her sing a song like Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be) or ‘Round Midnight. There is something about the way she places a note somewhere in the middle of her throat and in back of her voice box goes right into your libido and says, Hello there, big boy. Her singing is so intimate as if she is sharing her wildest secrets with you, her vocal presence is one of essence and honesty.
Her stunning looks and professionalism on stage, her attitude and the way she treats the crowd capture your attention instantly. She has a live performance that leaves the audience haunted by her cherubic voice. A true professional to the art.
Juliette Esper’s “Revival” is a classic work of sultry & seductive artistry from this Irish Chanteuse. A new beginning & rebirth for this multi talented singer, as she traverses through genres of jazz, blues, free form, traditional, alternative, trance & roots music all with the stamp & creative fluidity that is her mark
“Lover Man” with its neo-standard atmospheric shadow play, contrasts with “Round Midnight” ; Both with their dreamy & smoke filled cool & darkly warm air of reflection. With other standards like “Lets Fall In Love” , “Caravan”, “No More Blues” & “Cry Me A River” we are treated to an in home live look into Juliette’s performance
Where she goes from here only she truly knows. Our guess is that the more she coalesces her divergent influences with the many talented musicians & composers that she gravitates to; Juliette Esper will always challenge her own limits, thereby transforming her stylistic approach into a new found hybrid of musical revival, that tips it’s hat to the past whilst leaning towards the ever present future of melodic intimacy & eclectic creativity
